I have a 98 explorer sohc and as you can guess the timing chain is mest up. Where can I get a replacement engine for under $2000? I would like to put in a ohv just for the single timing chain. Is it a direct replacement?

First off how mechanically inclined are you? Doing the SOHC timing chain and guide replacement is not that big of a ordeal. The Complete timing set runs about $400. There is alot of threads on doing this.

The second option would be to search the local junkyards for a SOHC with low mileage, but you could endup with the same problems as you already have. Another option would be getting on ebay and just picking up a Reman engine from a supplier.

The last option would be what you mensioned, Doing the 4.0 OHV swap. The biggest thing would be loosing about 50 hp/ 50 tq. This swap would require a 4.0 OHV, Engine wiring harness, PATS reprogramming, OHV Exhaust. ECT. ECT.

My opinion is just fix the SOHC in your truck and move on.
