I currently own a 2001 Sport with the SOHC V6 engine. I am thinking of buying a new 2002 Explorer which also lists a "SOHC V6" engine. But I have read where people are saying the '02 has a "completely redesigned" V6 engine and the reliability may be very poor due to past problems with this design, and also that it is "slower". The Ford literature claims the new '02 to be "faster". Does anyone know if the new V6 '02 engine is the same as the one in my '01 Sport? And do pre-2002 4-door Explorers use the same V6 engine?

the 2002 with the v6 is the same as your 01 sport. horsepower is the same as well. the reason it IS slower than yours is that the 4 door weighs a good bit more, the 4 door will offer a "newly designed" 4.6 v8 maybe thats what you saw?

i drove the 6cy 2002. the interior is very cheap and "plasticy". it felt as if i was driving a mini expedition the way the seats were situated. to be honest, i was not impressed but its what i expected. the new car is much more nimble and easier to handle. steering response is better as if the car was just lowered. in comparison, the car drives like a mix between a windstar and an escape. i say hold out a bit.
