Solved: Engine oil and filter for 4.0 SOHC - 5W-20 or 5W-30?

I always use the cheapest Full Synthetic Walmart TECH2000?/SUPERTECH and same TECH2000/SUPERTECH oil filter in the FL1A size in my 4.0SOHC. 260K+ going strong. 7500-8500 oil change intervals.

thanks. I changed the title. But I was looking for that tag “solved” that I sometimes see on other posts titles.

I think mods typically do that. @peterk9 would surely know, and Is plenty helpful.

interesting thread!!! ive been using mobil 5-30 full syn since day one and switched to mobil 5-30 full syn HM at 250k when the rear main had a slight drip... for the entire 310k ive had my x ive used the fram PH8A filter... now after reading all of this ive probably been using the wrong filter but all things considered i dont tuink theyre as horrible as portrayed since ive used them for 310k and at 2.5k OCI

Also, would you reccomend I switch to a 0-20 or 0-30, or a thicker hot weight oil such as 5-40 or 0-40 if that exists? And, Ive heard some people swear by diesel oil like rotella t6. Is there any difference? sorry im not very educated in oils except for synthetic is better...

ive always used fram filters and cant figure out why anyone would slam a company that only makes filters over one that makes all of the other things and some filters.... if exxon/mobile started making cola would everyone slam coke or pepsi.... in the end nobody is using dollar store paper towels inside their filters

I cut open a few brands now I will only buy motorcraft

well thats the problem.... quit cutting filters open and never look at the hotdog after you bite it
Maybe I'm still sleeping but I don't get it
I will say when you spend the money I did on a engine and mods
You cut open the filter on the first couple oil changes

Me thinks he was joking; don't ask or look too closely at what's in the HotDog\Sausage\Spam,
unless of course you want to become vegan.
D
YEAH! i dont want to know what the filter is catching... just that its a filter... if its clean then its a filter and if its dirty then im sure the filter isnt the problem

Synthetic oil, Motorcraft filter. Period. End of sentence. Do not pass go, do not collect $200.
I wonder what you think about K&N Engineering? Have used those filters on all of my Fords since 2014 with Castrol Edge Full Synthetic, and never had an issue, The filter material hold material well, and hold up physically. No warping or since of degradation aside from the discolor obviously. (after dissection) or in the drain pan. I do believe in using Motorcraft parts, however I am open to something that may exceeded their exacting standards. For Instance Dorman makes a aftermarket PTU for Gen 5 Explorers/Edges that has a Drain in the bottom so that you can actually service the PTU, and don't have to drill your own drain. Why wouldn't you use something like that? Cheers!

I cut filters periodically as well. I have the tool for airplane filters, which are ALWAYS cut at oil changes. My truck is my daily driver, and I’d like to know when my engine starts talking to me…before I end up stranded a couple hundred miles from home. But that’s just me, everyone has a different philosophy.

I don’t use Fram simply because they used to use cardboard as their filter caps. That may have changed. To me, Motorcraft is the cheapest filter of solid build quality. I’m sure other great filters are out there.

Motor craft was a cheap filter, now if you can buy it, its $12&$15 a filter. What happen?

$9 on Rockauto, I buy a bunch when I order other parts

Well They lied to us about a biological weapons attack which screwed up the global economy. Then they printed money until the printer ran out of ink and paper with nothing to back it up. Then while that was going on they prosecuted a war on affordable energy. So everything is twice to three times what it was a few years ago. I still like the build quality and engineering of the K&N Products. I will take the Pepsi challenge against the Motorcraft. That would make a interesting yet minty Lube Tube Vydia.

Rock auto plus shipping. So say $10 each including shipping. The bunch would be around ten.
It use to be $5 at walmart. Now they may have only one, if they do have it at the new price.

I going towards wix products

Price really isn't the consideration here. Quality and Protective Qualities mean more to me than how much it costs every 5k miles.

Wix is horrible these days. There is a real reason the pro's recommend genuine Motrocraft filter. I am simply soliciting opinions on the offerings from K&N Engineering. I have had good luck, and found their filter material to be as good or better than OEM.

Wix51515
Motorcraft recently changed the design of the FL1A filter it is now made with thin metal and the bypass has been moved to the bottom of the filter which doesn't work as good when you have hydraulic timing parts so I switched to the wix 51515 Which is made exactly the way ford used to build the FL1A filter almost seems to be the same factory
