i am looking into getting an explorer for my next vehicle. i'll probably get a 96-98 but had a few questions about the 4wd systems. i want 4x4, since i'd like to lift the truck eventually and go off-roading. i like how jeep cherokees let you choose (4 hi, 4 lo etc) but i'm not sure how it works in an ex.
i don't think i want the AWD version because it probably kills gas and i'd feel better knowing that i can switch to 4wd when i need to. can someone shed some light on the subject for me?
thanks for any info...

ps. my gf used to have a 93 xlt a while back, and it had a push-button 4x4 selector, but it really didn't work well (the car was a POS though)

Welcome to the site.. TRy to find a 97-01 Explorer. the 1995-1996 didn't have 4HI.. THey only had 2WD/4AUTO/4LO. They 97-01 Explorers have the Borq Warner electrical transfer case. The 97-01 has automatic 4wd, 4hi, 4lo. The auto 4wd, can be disabled by doing the brown wire mod. Look in the useful thread section on this site for more info. Wish you luck on your near purchase.
