Someone make the BEEP BEEP BEEP stop in reverse!

I recently bought a 2001 Explorer Sport which came with a reverse sensor that beeps (quite loudly) when I reverse. My dealer had said it could be easily disabled, but when I brought it to the service dept they said they thought it was part of "the brain" and that I would just have to live with it. AAAGGGHHH. Does anyone know how I could find out where this is in the wiring diagram? I know there must be a way to make it stop. Please help!

Can you locate the speaker or the sensor and disconnect them??? I would try and locate the speaker first. Just a thought.

No, it starts as soon as I put in in reverse. Additionally, it's supposed to beep faster and louder when you are close to an object, but that doesn't happen, I tested it by getting less than a foot away from a pillar in my parking garage (where the beeping echoes through 5 stories I might add

yikes! Have you looked in the fuse box? The system might have a designated fuse.

Or go to another dealer, if they couldnt disable it for you they are not very good Ford techs are they?

just keep backing into that pillar at work until all the sensors are broken. the quick & cheap fix.

i rented an escape that kept chiming if you didn't put your setbelt on. drove me nuts! i feel your pain.

check the owners manual (if you haven't already). sometimes there is a method or sequence of on/offs with the egnition & other switches that will deactivate such a device.

there was one for disabling the chiming on the escape, but i didn't bother b/c i only had it for 3 days.


p.s. that escape was fast & pretty good 4 wheeling. i beat the crap out of it.

If you have the rear sensor stuff (forgot the technical term) there is a button on the console to disable it (although you have to disable it everytime you start the car).

I think what you have is just a reverse light that beeps when its on. One of the dealerships here is notorious for putting them in for 'safety.' If the sound is comming from a tail light, pull your reverse lights and one of them will have a little 'box' attached to it. replace that with a normal bulb.

However if it is the reverse sensor, it needs to be fixed because its not working properly.

ha, backing it into the pillar isn't too bad of an idea if it would just MAKE IT STOP!

I checked the manual (and the service guy did too) they said the fuses weren't listed so they had no clue - any idea where I might find a diagram of the fuses?

Apparently, there is supposed to be a switch on the dash to enable/disable, but mine is conveniently missing that.....

i think jefe's right! if it sounds like what the noise a 'big rig' or construction equip. then it probably isn't the sensor. follow jefe's advice!

also, if the noise is coming from the bulb, it would be easier to fix w/ a baseball bat than hitting the pillar

If you dont have that switch then what Jefe said is probably true. Its just a little aftermarket device that has a reverse light AND alarm in it that beeps in reverse and you just need a new bulb.

I'll second that it could be the bulb and not the sensing system. Stupid question, but you're sure you have those 4 sensors in the rear bumper, right? I'd take a look at your bulbs anyway.

I will check the bulb and see if it is attached, that makes more sense. If it's that easy, I will be happy (and sane!)

The salesperson who sold me the car may have assumed that the beeping was the sensor, but it sure isn't acting as a sensor, just as a construction vehicle! Also, since I do not have the standard enable/disable button, your advice makes logical sense -- some idiot just put it in the bulb.

I'D LOOK AT THE FUSE BOX TOO, BUT SEE IF ANYTHING ELSE IS ON THAT CIRCUTE FIRST. MIGHT FIND THAT INFO IN THE 5 OR 6 HUNDRED PAGE MANUAL THAT COMES WITH IT, OR A HANES GUIDE.

Get rid of the seatbelt beeping

Someone mentioned the annoying beeping when you don't have your seatbelt fastened. I also found this annoying, and have since disabled it on my 2002 X. Since I usually have Explorers as rentals I tend to shut off the beeping on those too. I believe this works on later model Escapes, X Sports, and the like. Here's the procedure:

NOTE: I AM NOT ENDORSING OR SUPPORTING NOT WEARING YOUR SEATBELT. THERE'S A REASON THIS FEATURE EXISTS.

1. Close all the doors, shutdown the car, turn the headlights to "off" (if you have "auto" lights, turn the dial to the "off" position).

2. Turn the key to ON/RUN do NOT start the engine.

3. After about 90 seconds the fasten seatbelt light will go off.

4. After the light is off, grab the driver's seat belt and plug/unplug the seat belt into the recepticle three (3) times. Do this quickly you only have 30/60 seconds.

5. The fasten seatbelt light with come back on. You are now in programming mode.

6. Turn the headlights to "park lights" then back to "off"

7. Grab the driver's seat belt and plug/unplug the seat belt into the recepticle three (3) more times. Again, do this quickly.

8. The fasten seatbelt light will flash several times, and you're all set.

To undo this, just repeat the procedure. The million dollar question is, what ELSE can you do in programming mode? Oh.. there's the geek in me.

Is there any way to disable the seatbelt chime on a '98? I've tried the above procedure and had no success, and the manual doesn't say anything about it :\ Anyone had any luck?

BTW- You could not get the "reverse sensing system" or "park aid" in a sport, only in the 4-door.

FYI: See the little button with the "P" on it next to the lighter? = disable switch for the sonar...
