Sounds from under the Hood

[4.0SOHC]

I was wondering if somebody with a 4.0 SOHC has the same kind of sound under the hood as I do. I noticed a couple of weeks ago, but it could have been there all a long.

It sounds like the clattering of Valves. i don't think it is the Timeing Chain, because the sound is exactly the same on each side of the engine. It isn't loud, basically you only hear it with the hood up and engine idleing. i just don't want to take it in the the Dealership, because I can't stand dealing with them.

My X doesn't have the same sound, but I think the valve covers are better. The appearance of each is a lot different.

Like I said, it might just be the way it is. It has 4K miles on it.

no, AC isn't running, although I did turn it off and on to see if there is a difference in sound. Do differ, still sound.

Alright, I was going to say that my A/C makes a ticking sound when running on low. Its just the a/c unit turning on and off. I thought that may be your problem but good luck looking for an answer.

Mine does the same thing at idle. Sounds like the valves are tapping. I've had the timing chain recall taken care of too.

Mine does it too. Sounds a lot like valve clatter, only audible at idle. It's the idler pulley on mine.

If you take a hose, put one side to your ear, then put the other side close to stuff, you can find the exact point where the noise is originating from. Just watch out for moving parts!

Mine clatters too. Took it in for the cam chain tensioner
service. They replaced the front tensioner and the lower intake O rings under warranty. My truck is a 97 with 34K miles. It idles much better when cold, but
clatters like crazy when warm.

Took it in again. This time they are replacing th rear tensioner and some other stuff. To do it they have to pull the engine. Ford will not waranty this one.

$1500. I almost died! Should get it back Friday.
I hpe that this is the end of it.

$1500 to fix a design flaw. The top end of the SOHC
motors must be junk

When I had to have my blend door replaced because of a design flaw, I called ford customer service and, with a little arguing, I got them to pay 80% of the final cost. Took a nice chunk out of the nearly $1000 bill.

i could be wrong, but I thought Ford fixed the problems with the T chain back in like 00' or 01'.

They cover only the front chain, not the back.

Dude, watch your mouth, I haven't had any problems with the FMC, just dealers. It is hard, but you just have to find a dealer that gives a rats ass

First, the only way the chain is covered is if it gets damaged due to a front chain guide. If the chain fails but the front chain guide is still functioning properly, it isn't covered. From Ford's letter to the dealer: "On some of the affected vehicles, the front cam chain guide assembly may wear or break and cause excessive cam chain noise that does not go away after five minutes of engine operation."

Again, it is not a recall. All it is is an Owner Notification Program which is Ford's way of saying that the warranty has been extended on the affected parts. In other words the camshaft tensioners and lower intake manifold o-rings are warranted for 6 years, 72K miles on applicable vehicles and the camshaft chain guides (cassettes) are warranted for 7 years, 100K miles. Anything else that would fail as a direct result of one of the above items failing would also be covered under the extended warranty. A recall would require Ford to replace it with an updated part whether it failed or not. Under the ONP, Ford will only replace the part after it fails.

Well I had something to do with the camshaft tensioners done and nothing had failed. I called them up, gave them my vin and asked if there were any outstanding recalls. They said that was one of them. I'm not saying your wrong, I'm just confused as to why they would replace it if nothing had failed.

Some dealers will do it either as good preventative service or because they mis-understood the program and tought it was a recall. I know my dealer typed in "recall" on my work order when I had 00M12 applied. I did have the noisy start-up but my dealer didn't even verify it. I called them up to question them about the program and they just said to bring it in. The program documentation clearly states the troubleshooting steps the dealer is supposed to do to verify the problem prior to making any repairs.
