Does anyone know is it okay to run a donut as a spare in the 2013 PIU? I know for normal operation you keep tire size within 3%. Mine has a full size steel rim and tire but I"m absolutely sure my wife cannot lift it out of the tire well. If not I have to switch to run flats which means I need 235/60/18's and I'd rather not do that.

Thanks all

If she can't get a full sized spare out, do you have an impact wrench onboard to do the lug nuts? Just wondering if a AAA membership might be prudent, or if you don't get flats often, a tow company will change a tire for around $50-$150 if a good Samaritan isn't passing by and willing to help.

Good point about the wrench.

OH yeah we have AAA. Just sometimes changing a tire is faster and leaves you stranded for less time. I just want to give her options if it ever happens to her. I don't want to jinx myself, we don't get tires often, so it's more of a just in case kind of deal. Just exploring options. My thought also is that if I do get the spare, I could just buy 3 new rims for winter tires as opposed to 4.

Thanks for all the input and suggestions it all gets put in the pool of decision making.

While I hope you never need it.....

...another important thing to remember is that the Police Utility's rear crash test rating is based on the full size, rear tire in place. In fact, there's a sticker at the top of the rear door explaining this.

And yes...that spare is a real chore to remove and put back...

That factory spare must weigh over 60 pounds if not close to 80. Took mine out to clean the tire well, and couldn't lift it back. Had to use a 2x4 as a ramp. As long as the donut is the same diameter and the wheel fits, it should be fine.

Indeed...a ton. I had to get the spare out a couple times to remove the rear trim panels. I found the easiest......scratch that....least difficult way was to tilt the forward part of the tire up and slide forward that way it clears the rear molding.

When I got my Utility, the wheels were really ugly, so I got a new set. They are made really heavy and strong for police use...
