Spark Plugs Help

I have heard of people having problems with bosch platnium 4s, it was brought up oh probably about 2 years ago now but I heard of several people having problem with the electrodes breaking off in the motor and doing some significant damamge. Though personally I have been running the regular bosch platniums in my truck with no complaint.

I was one of those people. We had a bosch +4 explode in the #4 cylinder on our '92. A piece of the electrode got stuck between the valve and the seat. I had to pull the head to get it fixed (I changed the head gaskets while I was down there and took all the carbon off the top of the pistons).

Ever since then I've been running Autolite plugs.. First the cheapies (changed every < 30k... which is about once a year) and now I'm trying the new autolite (I forgot the model) that list for $13 each (I didn't pay that, but I figured I'd try them).

Did you change your wires? I had exactly the same problem when I changed plugs and not wires recently. The X started fine and would run okay at low speeds, but it drove increasingly rough as I increased speed. It did not do this before the plug change. But replacing the wires cleared things right up.

As for plugs, I've had at least five different non-Ford mechanics at different shops tell me never to use anything but Motorcraft Double Platinum plugs in an Explorer. They've either told me other plugs don't run as well, don't last as long, or both. I did actually use Bosch once (Motorcrafts are a pain to get because none of the auto parts stores around me carry them). They ran fine but I did have to change them after about 12K miles. Just the other day a manager at NAPA told me Motorcraft makes Autolite. He said Autolite plugs are equal to Motocraft. I haven't had a chance to confirm this, but if anyone knows please chime in.

Yea I just had a fuel injector replaced and my mechanic said bosch platinum 4s are bad because the plug goes into the bottom of the block and doesn't need all of that spark that they put out. He said they are more efficient for imports where the plug would go in the top of the engine. I haven't changed them yet. The guy at Advanced Auto said he has a mustang with the 5.0 (same as mine) and runs those plugs with no prob and to keep them in... also my mechanic said to use autocraft platinum 1s...

bosch vs motorcraft

Although you can run Bosch from my experience which is limited outside of my own X.... I have had ok performance from Bosch. Bosch are pretty much used primarily for foreign cars. The Motorcraft ones I have now work like a champ. I wont ever use any other kind in my X from now on.

hey, guy's i'm new to the post don't know alot about 4 wheel drives but do own a ranger more into the performance game also own a lightning and my wife has an 06 gt mustang if you don't want to pay dealer price for motorcraft plugs use the autolite platinum i've heard they make the motorcraft plugs and usually give a horsepower gain on 5.0's anyway

I hade the same problem.. They were bosch platinum w/e and once I installed them my car ran like ****... and I was highly reluctant to put the Motorcraft in, but right after my car ran 100% better I think some times the manfactur make mistakes or some cars are more sensitive.

Better heat resistance from autolite than motorcraft make you dont lose hp in hot temp. Thats an universal fact heat=resistance in wires and conductive materials so weaker spark due to higher temp in motrocraft plugs. No gain but better heat dissipation make you have your top hp even hot temp and long rides. Thats all subject closed
