spark plugs

ok, i've noticed a drop in mileage since i put the regular autolite plugs in. do i need to go back to a platinum? i'm looking at autolites again, but do i want regular platinums or double platinums?

Those plugs should have no effect on mileage.

I assume you properly gapped them?

yep, properly gapped. it definitely seems to be sucking a little more gas than it was. it also feels a little more sluggish on the freeway. doesn't really make any sense....

if you were sold the regular copper plugs, then it may have an effect. explorers come stock with platnium plugs, and i've heard that sometimes they don't run right without using platnium.

napa won't even sell me a standard regular copper plug when I went for plugs for my truck. either had to be the better NGKs or bosches. they didn't have autolites at the one i was at. it is the same at canadian tire, and the local parts store. there is a note in the system that says use platniums only.

i'm not saying not to use copper, or that it won't run, but platnium seems to be the recommended one. bosch platniums are crap and a waste of money though.

Double platinum and platinum are recommended because of longevity.

well plugs are gonna have to wait a week or 2 now, i need brakes front and rear. now i gotta figure out if i want semi-metallic or carbon metallic....

did you do the wires at the same time? maybe you got a bad wire. i did spark plugs and wires and one new wire was bad out of the box. had a misfire on number 5 not bad enough to turn on the cel but could wacth it on the scan tool misfire counter

disconnect the battery for 20 mins so the computer can learn to operate using the new plugs

Nope, it will not reset the keep alive memory that the computer gathered over hundreds of miles of driving. Yes, believe it or not the computer adapts and accounts for faulty/aging components.

very true.

i changed mine recently, got the plugs in, and the X ran worse. Idle was sky high, about 900 in drive.

i was looking over the old plugs. there were heavily worn with a wide gap. i said the computer must have gradually adjusted for this. i reset the computer. worked like a charm. now the idle is a rock solid 600 again.

the first step of every repair manual says disconnect the battery for this reason.

I run NGK copper cause I have a blower, and they work well.
