What is the recommended stock spark plug for a 2003 explorer with the 4.0 sohc motor?

Most here will agree it's hard to fault the OEM spark plugs. Many choices, but Motorcraft SP-500(X) Finewire Platinum plugs have been widely used here on the 4.0L SOHC and I've never read a single complaint about them.

I thought I remembered these motorcraft sp500x being pre-gapped?
All the plugs I just got are at .045
Should be.054
Maybe I’m just not remembering correctly?

@john cris

.054" is correct. I'm NOT a believer in "pre-gapped" spark plugs. All it takes is a drop on the snout and the gap closes. CAREFULLY re-check the gaps and avoid touching the platinum center electrode as much as possible. Anti seize on the plug threads optional, but I prefer to use copper or nickel anti seize sparingly on the threads, especially with aluminum heads. Good thing is you have another 75,000 miles minimum before replacing plugs again. BTW, smart choice going with the time proven Motorcraft SP500(X) plugs.

Always check your gap. Do NOT apply anti-seize.
