i noticed that the spark plug on the #5 cylinder keeps on burning out. The area of the porcelin under the prong gets burned until black. I replaced plugs and wires. also i am experiencing a constant thumping noise coming from the right front end, can anybody tell me whats the cause of this

If I remember correctly, the #5 plug fouling is normally caused by the a lower intake manifold leak. It seems to be pretty common.

I'd do a search on lower intake and you should find enough info to know if that is what your getting.

My 99 SOHC was starting hard in the morning and the check engine light came on. Diagnosis- Faulty #5 plug wire and fouled plug. Dealership replaced plug, wire and performed lower intake manifold recall along with cam chain tensioners. Recall was something like OM12? Mine never made any kind of funny noise and has run perfect since the work was done 10,000 miles ago. Maniak is right, #5s on the SOHC give problems due to the lower intake manifold gaskets. The good news is, I haven't heard of anyone that the recall didn't fix or help.
