speaker amp question

Ok I have a 2 channel amp that I want to use to power my front and rear speakers (infinity reference 6x8). I realize that it would be better to use a 4 channel amp but I would like to use what I already have. The question is would powering all four speakers from the 2 channel amp be any better than just powering them from the head unit?

depending on the headunit you have, it can take the strain off of the headunit. therefore de-creasing headunit heat. and you have more power than powering from your headunit,the average power of a headunit is around 60 watts per speaker (i think) and at 4 speakers thats 240 watts. so you could essentially get a 500 watt 4 chanel amp and power each speaker at 125 watts.

So even if I used the 2 channel amp for all 4 speakers its would still be better than using the head unit?

yeah pretty much, i mean, its not like all songs that you listen to are digitally mastered to take use of all 4 channels, it will be stereo left, and right.

Can the 2 channel amp handle a lower ohm load, if you run the speakers in parallel...?

In my Paseo, I run Infinity Kappa 4" components and Infinity Kappa 6½" coaxials off a Rockford Fosgate Punch 60. Handles the lower ohm load with no problem, and puts out 280 watts in that setup.

yea I believe so, the speakers are 60 watts rms, 180 peak and the amp is 60 watts rms into 2 ohms and 30 watts rms into 4 ohms. But the speakers are 4 ohm so what does that mean?

When you wire you two 4ohm speakers in parrallel (i.e. front right & rear right) you will be putting a 2ohm load on the right channel of your amp. So your amp puts out 60 watts at 2 ohms to the 2 speakers. Basically giving each speaker 30 watts.

Yes, this would be better than running them off of your hu. Even though your hu may say it putts out 50x4 or 60x4 that is peak power on a good day. Your hu is probably putting out more like 10x4 or 15x4 rms.
