I believe most are around 106-110, some are around 100 like yours, some around 115. I don't think it follows any specific pattern, but probably has something to do with axle ratios.

I believe that my 91 XLT has a 95 mph limit.
An upgraded computer module will eliminate the speed limiter.
:chug:

My '98 Explorer XLT have a speed limiter of 110 MPH.
Check your manual or a Haynes manual to see if you can find information about shutting it off. Also look under governor

mine's at 106, feels real funny when you hit that at full throttle

According to my Brother-in-law (previous owner of my X) mine with the 3.73 and stock tires will get to 115 before it shuts down. Fastest I've had it it is 95

I've got to 100 before but let go b/c it was shaking bad. It's probably b/c of the tires I have.

What happens when you hit the speed limiter? Is there like a change in the driving or something? To my knowledge, I have never hit the speed limiter, so I don't know where it is. Due to the fact that my speedometer goes to 85, I can not tell exactly how fast I've gone. I know I've gotten it up to over 100 from when I was driving beside my friend's Mustang, but I don't know how fast I've really gotten it. Anyway, the point of this post is, I have no idea where my speed limiter is.

The speed limiter will just cause the engine to cut back on fuel and it'l feel like it is missing or whatever.

I've had my 95 up to 105+ MPH and didn;t hit a limiter. i have 3.73 with 31" tires.

Also i noticed your from Michigan. If your interested in joining up with some other explorer guys, please visit this link:

Most limiters vary with them topping out at 108 MPH due to the factory tire speed rating. However, FORD failed to properly program the speed limiter on the 95+ X's. Several of them are at 118+. This issue came up during the FIRESTONE issue, but never made it into the limelight. I've had my 97 Sport up to 124MPH (montoring for a drivability misfire issue) before backing down. Never hit the limiter. Shifts into OverDrive at 87MPH

Cool, thanks. This sounds like a fun game. Now I have to get back on the highway with my friend in the Mustang and see how high we can get before hitting the limiter :)

I hit mine at 115 :( too slow for me, but that will change.

Mine has 3.73's and stock size tires (235/75/R15), and the speedo showed 112 when mine kicked in. Speedos are known to be off at high speeds so who knows what the real speed was.
