I have a 93 Explorer Limited and am getting a Pioneer avic-n1. I will install it myself and after reading the install manual, the only thing I'm not sure about is the speed sensor wire. Anybody happen to know which wire it is?

If it's the same color as the second gens it's a grey wire with a black stripe. I would guess that there isn't one in the radio wiring harness of a '93?

It's a black wire. I'm sure you can tap into it at the ECM but for my speedometer I ran all the way to the transfer case and spliced.

I'm gonna have to crawl under it and take a look, I thought the speedometer on the 93's was cable operated!? Even if that's the case perhaps there is an electronic speed sensor as well, otherwise how could you have a top speed limiter if the ECM doesn't know how fast you're going?

The speedometer is cable driven but there's an electric VSS for cruise control and to tell the tranny to shift into OD.

OK, just took a look and i'll be darned if there isn't an electrical connector sitting right on top of the speedo cable coming out of the transfer case. It has two wires, a red w/orange stripe and brown w/black stripe. Which one do I need to tap in to?

Briwayjones: I haven't taken the factory radio out yet so I don't know if this wire is part of the radio harness. There aren't any radio functions that depend on speed so I doubt it.

Cool, thanks. Does it work similar to other sensors where you have a 5 volt reference voltage on one wire and the voltage varies on the other wire depending on the speed?

Stew.

Just a follow up, I bought the repair manual for some front end work I need to do and it has the wiring diagrams.

On the ECM pin 3 is the brown w/black stripe and pin 6 is the red w/orange stripe for the speed sensor.

Oh, forgot to add, people usually ground the speed sensor wire from the HU so they can use the screen while driving. And on my X the wire that sends the signal is black, thought it was red for a long time until I switched wires.

On my Pioneer the speed sensor input is to compliment the gps signal, the parking brake input wire is the one you want to permanently wire to get DVD while driving. Not that I would ever watch movies while driving because it would be my luck that I would either get a big fat ticket or wreck in to something.

Ahh! That's right. Wow, you've got GPS on there. Nice!
