speedo gears ? pinion gear angle ?

O.k Guys just a few Questions.

First of all i have a bone stock unlifted 98 limited 4x4 and i'm wanted to by the bfg at ko's you all are praising here. my questions are will this affect my speedo if i currently have 235/75/r15's and i want to go to 31/10.50's ? If it will affect my speedo how much to change the gears?

Also i heard something about the pinion angle, now my truck is stock so will this tire change affect the angle and wear out my pinion gear ?

Last question guys, would i have to change my gearing to keep stock performance, is so how much $$ will it cost ?

1) Yes, the 31s will affect your speedo. Use these links to determine how much:

2) Bigger tires don't affect pinion angle.


3) The difference in performance will depend on your current gearing. Here's a link to determine final gear ratio after tire change:

I wouldn't think you'd need to regear unless you have 3.27's, which I don't think 4 door models came with. Look in the driver's side door jam at the sticker. Look where it says axle code. Tell us what it says and we'll tell you what gears you have.
I switched to the exact same tire you are getting and haven't noticed much of a difference in power. I have the OHV engine while you have the SOHC, so you will be even better off than me.

I've got a 4 door and my axle code is 41 = open 3.27.
The 4 doors do come with 3.27 diffs.

Ahh, I didn't notice he had a Limited. I'm not sure if the Limiteds are available with a 3.27 either. But I'm pretty sure my XLT does, according to the door.

If you do it yourself, it's less that 10 bucks from what I've read.

BTW Stephen S, I should have added 4x4. I don't think 4 door 4x4's came with 3.27's. The extra weight of a 4x4 would be too much for 3.27's I would think.

AXLE CODE

O.k i checked my truck out and the AXLE CODE IS 45 . I hope someone can let me know what my gearing is and will this be good enough to run 31's with ??

You have 3.55 gears. I have the same and am running 31" tires. You will be fine. You will actually be even better than me since you have the SOHC engine.
