I just got my '96 AWD transfer case today and I called up Ford to get the speed sensor for it. Before I left I researched on here and figured I needed the green 17 tooth gear. All seemed well. I called and they had the sensor in stock.

So I took the 2WD sensor out of my transmission just to make sure the plug ins would be the same (otherwise I would need to get a whole harness).

So I get there and she goes back and brings the sensor out. I take it out of the box and it doesn't come with a rear. I tell her I'll need a green gear too.

So I'm looking at these two sensors and they are EXACTLY the same. They have the same Ford Engineer Number and everything. Now before I left I made sure that the sensor wouldn't fit into the transfer case (I thought and hoped it would).

So basically, the parts I were picking up were the exact same ones I had! I asked her WTF, why are you telling me these are for a 1996 transfer case when I just tried them and the gear is too long?

So, does anyone know whats up? Is she trying to pass off a 2wd transmission gear as a 4wd tcase gear? Do AWD have a different gear all together? I pulled the gear off and the sensor works perfectly. Has anyone swapped gears in an AWD and do you have a part number?

thanks!

I think I figured it out. I found how Robert said the Ranger Station charts were misleading and when they say "automatic" they mean 2wd auto, and when they say "manual" they mean manuals and 4wd automatics. I hope thats the case at least.
