I need help.
I want to go fast.
I am 17.
I purchased an explorer thinking i would be happy with it. It is a 98' Sport.
Red.
Shiny.
A good looking vehicle.
I am happy with it.
My 0-60 is 10.87 power braking.
It is totally stock and i get crappy gas mileage.
An Integra GSR stock 0-60 is 6.8.
An Integra GSR is 22,780.
I make around 17 grande a year at Best Buy.
My parents pay half of my insurance.
I pay for Gas.
I am 17.
I am going to a college that is 7 hours away from my house.
When im 18 i can afford one plus a supercharger.
Or i can try to get my dad to let me sell my explorer.
And buy an integra.....
What should i do? What would YOU do? Should i wait till im 18.?
Honest Input.

P.S.- I know an explorer is not a race car. I didn't buy it as a race car. My dad pressured me into buying it. He doesn't want me to go fast.

I forgot to mention i have 5 grande i can do mods to my explorer. I was thinking about dropping in a 302 or going with a supercharger. Or down the road i could do both plus all other mods Ex. cat-back, K&N Filtercharger, racing camshaft, Headers.....

Thank you for your input.

Paco,

First of all, are you and/or your parents going to be able to pay for college? If not, use your money for school! That being said, you have the SOHC engine if you have a 98. If you really want to blow your money, do a 302 swap and stroke it to 347 like Troll. The BBK supercharger is for the OHV, not the SOHC, so you can't do that. If you really want power, that's your best bet. If not, do the normal stuff like intake, exhaust, and chip. Good luck, and make sure the rest of your life is squared away before you blow your tuition money.

IF you want to go fast and have something that everybody else does than get the ricer, but if u want something trully unique and fast 347 stroker it is .I am 18 so and i like going fast but i like to hear my tires humm alittle more as i drive but for when i wanna go fast i steal my buddies 00 yamaha r1 which has 150 hp and the bike is only 346pounds yeah throwing up a wheely at 60 is fun....

So if the BBK Supercharger is only for the OHV, is there anything i can do with an SOHC to make it go REALLY fast? I take it i am better off going with a 302 swap and boring it to 347 and putting a supercharger on that instead? Yes i have already paid for college from mowing lawns. I had it prepaid by age 12 :).

thanks,
travis

paco, im 17 and trying to get mine to go fast too, i have a 98 xlt 4 door. you can get a supercharger for yours at explorer express, but its around 3000, if you want fast and nice, spend your money on suspension, tires, & the less expensive mods, exhaust, superchip, headers, filter injector. wait for the supercharger, its pretty expensive, just my input. check out my website www.bobsride.com

Once again, the supercharger will not work with the SOHC, there's one for the 4L OHV or for the 5L V8. Oh, and I don't know if it'll work if you stroke the V8.

Where can I find information on a supercharger for a 5.0l V8?

Explorer Express has the 5.0L supercharger. I don't know who it's made by. It could be a modification of BBK's mustang blower. Look around at the big blower manufacturers: Paxton, BBK, Vortech, and Powerdyne.

in the explorer express catalog it says that a sohc supercharger is going to come out next summer or something like that but I know it says sohc supercharger available?? I can't remember.

call up explorer express and see what they have to say, they might have it but havent updated the catalog

I'm in college now. And i can say that i wish i had a small rice burner for when i'm at school and my explorer for when i go home. I don't have cash coming out of my butt, SO i can't have both. So for me if i had to buy another car i would get the ricer, and don't get me wrong, I LOVE MY EXPLORER!!!! But now I'm goin to keep my explorer and pay it off (since i just put a new trans in it)and take it off the road. Then I will buy a ricer for school.(since i'll be in school until hell freezes over) :)
So go for the car if you don't have alot of money for gas. And believe me, you won't be working 40 hours a week when your in college. Just my .02

Having just graduated from college in May, I'd like to give you some advice. I spent all 4 years of college driving a 1997 Honda Civic EX Coupe. Nice car - fully loaded, 5spd tranny. Fairly quick (0-60mph in about 8.8secs). I leased my 2001 Sport about 2 months ago. Much happier with the Sport even though it has an automatic tranny and gas mileage has been cut from 30mpg to 14mpg. The problem with the Civic or even the Integra GSR (Type R as well - my old roomates dad has a new Type R) is that they are very small 4 cylinder engines. There are a million and one different mods that you can do, but there will always be lots of other people who have faster civics and integras. So, if you don't want the explorer anymore (for whatever reason) and you want a ricer, here are my suggestions. Pick up an early 90's 300ZX Turbo or RX7 Turbo. My roomate has a ridiculously modded '90 Ford Taurus SHO and a super fast (stock) '91 300ZX Turbo. Both cars are very fast, but the ZX is a ton of fun to drive. With a stock ZX Turbo, you can go way faster than you want to, and blow past all the civics and integras you want. Only downside, only holds two people. Upside is that you can buy a used ZX for around 12 or 13K - lots less than a new integra. Think about what is most important to you - very fast sports car (lots of fun and very impractical) or an Explorer (you know the pros and cons!). Just my opinion.

BTW-
You can check out my roommates SHO and ZX at Dead Link Removed Check out the super cool pictures of Jeff and I during Spring Break last year. We went to Bragg-Smith Drving School in Las Vegas. We also rented a pretty neat graduation present. Check out the URL

Supercharger for SOHC

Explorer Express is currenly making an SuperCharger for the 4.0 Single Cam. The lady told me that it would be out in February or March. She said the gains would be similar to that of the V8. If i had 8 grande, what would be the best mods, including the SC.

thanks
paco

Supercharger
Headers
Intake modification (K&N/KKM FIPK with cold air box)
Cat-back Exhaust
Custom programmed Superchip computer chip (if the blower doesn't include one)
BBK 66mm TB (if it fits the SOHC)
Performance cam shaft and related parts (if there's one for the SOHC)
maybe high flow injectors
maybe high flow fuel pump
maybe larger MAS
Performance ignition system, wires, and plugs
Ram-air hood

I'm sure I'm missing something, but that's a start ;)

Also think about the 347 V8 swap.

May I present, Troll II!

Thanks guys i really appreciate your input. I think im going to stick with the exploder till i am out of college. I will probably do some of the more important mods, SC catback system, chip, cold air induction etc. I really wanna learn about engines and cars. I'm actually hoping to be an engine engineer or something and move to detroit. Anyways, i have a few questions,

1. Where can i find a bigger/better throttle body for a SOHC engine?

2. What are some websites that carry performance parts?

3. How do i persuade my dad into letting my buy a supercharger?

4. Where can i go in person to learn about cars? A class maybe?

5. Alec i live in austin as well. I would love to hang out sometime maybe somewhere public, i go downtown alot.

Thank you VERY much,
Travis (PACO)

First of all- completely FORGET about the rice!
if you want FAST- go Mustang- stay american

second- if you do deside to go 302 base- DONT stroke to 347.... go 331 ci.... a lot of people are having problems...granted many are running fine also.... i have read that some people are only getting 20,000 miles out of a 347... the stroke is to long for a 302 block...
on the other hand 331 with a blower would would be nice. better yet go 351 if your going through the troubles of a 302 swap anyhow. I drive a 96 black V-8 limited explorer I have lowered about 1 1/2, with chrome mustang cobra R 17" rims, tinted windows, and custom grill. for the motor(302 V-8) I have installed ford motorsport(FMS) roller rockers, FMS E303 cam, FMS double timing chain, FMS stailess shortie headers, true 2 1/2" dual exhaust w/ 2 chamber flowmasters, superchip, and a powerdyne supercharger. It really runs great and flies compared to my dads stock 98 V-8. But if I was to do it again- and after playing with my mustang and comparing- I would have gone Paxton Novi 2000 and made it fit.
the only reason i went powerdyne was they had a direct BOLT on kit at the time and this was my first install. I would also go cobra intake with GT-40X heads.

but if you are staying 4.0 .... check out http://www.performanceproducts.com
and
http://www.explorerexpress.com
the performance products have more in their catalog then on-line... they have trottle bodies and such for the 4.0...
I would change the throttle body, Mass air, see if you can find aftermarket headers/ aftermarket exhaust... and then supercharge.... im not sure who makes a kit- i know eaton does- not sure about powerdyne..or vortech... but if paxton does- i would definetly go with that.... personaly i would stay away from a root type supercharger- like bbk or eaton but thats just me....
also if you decide to go 302- check out http://www.corral.net
best mustang(302) website around..- i live on it

later
Marc

Why don't you get into a Mustang 4.6 GT? I personally would much rather have that than the ricer. It sounds great, pulls you back into the seat in every gear and it'll beat the pants of a new Supra(did that this summer). My GF has a 2000 4.6 convertable so whenever I get bored and want to go fast, I just take her GT out for a spin. If you can afford that, then for an extra 2 grand you can get the Cobra....nice!
