I have a friend that bought a used Jeep Cherokee that had no diffy fluid in the rear axle. He refilled it and it worked for a couple years, but now the spider gears are stripped. He thinks he has a Dana44.

I'm trying to remember exactly how mine looked and fitted in the diffy, but cannot recall exactly. Am I correct in assuming that he can simply replace spider gears without worrying about resetting the gears/pinion depth/etc? If my memory serves correctly, I think he doesn't even need to remove the ring or pinion, does he?

He's a decent shadetree mechanic and wants to know if this is a DYI job. I'm thinking he can..... right?

Yes, you can change the gears without removing the carrier.
