I was thinking a loose wire somewhere as well, if I give the dash a tap SOMETIMES it will work but only for a minute. I thought maybe I loosened something when I installed my gauge bezel but I checked everything and it was all tight.
Not real sure where to look. If (huge if) we still have a coil, the tach should be hooked to it somewhere. Do you have a maintenance book you can look for the wiring in?
On the old ranger, one wire was just loose and made contact when it wanted to.
