Welcome to the site!

Hmm being good offroad is a very general term. A sportrac is certainly NOT an awesome stock offroad vehicle....but in my opinion no explorer really is. But if you're looking to modify one, I'm sure it will run with the best. Have fun exploring the site. Feel free to ask any questions.

Jason

ok cool, ya i wasnt planning to keep it all that stock, if i can get one after the end of the year sale im gonna save up put like a 2-3inch lift and gets some 32s or 33s just something basic so i can do some mild roading. then later ill go full blown

are there alotta good places to go wheeling in Ca???

the Sport trac will do very well offroad built up right. If I had the Money to do so I would built a sport trac my self. If you want it to perform dont get a 2wd get a 4x4.

what is this 2wd you speak of??? ;)

all i gotta say is I HATE YOU! 16 an gettin a brand new car. people think im rich gettin a 99 Sport as my first car. when you gonna get a Sport Trac, da** your parents must be rich. and to the fact that there arent that many, its because there a new HYBRID so it take a little while for them to catch on, i mean look at the El-Camino.

whoa whoa whoa i am anything but rich. see ya you did get a 99' but it was like 200 when you did right??? smae purpose, im gonna have to wait until march and pray that someone around still has one in the lot(so i can get it cheap)

my parents are only gonna pay the downpayment(which is what like 4-5k on a car like this right???) then im gonna get a job and have to pay insurance and the car payments....my parents would never buy me a 25,000 dollar car...never

2wd = two wheel drive.

i know thats what i gotta do also, but my deal was it is my moms car for like 6 months, so i get it in Jan. so its pretty well paid for but i still gotta pay the paments on it. and you better get a hell of a good job, your insurance in gonna be a b**ch cause a brand new car an the engine, its gonna be in upwards of $300 a month. cause mine is $200 somethin, so be prepared for that, and check with your insurance company. as far as down payments go i dont think ive ever seen a 4-5K down before. its only what you want to pay on it say if you want low payments put 10K on a 15K car, so.

Well, for 5000$ you can also get a relly nice early Ex. When you get your job you can start building it up. A few months and about 2000$ later you'll have a great truck that will look at least as cool as a ST. The insurance will be much cheaper. You'll have no monthly payment to make and you'll be able of some serious off-roading w/out worring about trashing a 25 000$ vehicle.
Just a thought...

naw, see the reason i want the sport trac isa for its looks...not because its an explorer. next you dont need a "hell of a good job" to pay for a sport trac...my local grocery store pays like 7.75 to start with and you make roughly 600 a month. that'd easily cover the car, the gas, and about 100 bucks extra just for me(going into saving mostly)

but thats just basic because im rounding. im thinking like 350 for the payment, 100 for insurance(most likely 50 though because my parents are gonna put the car under their name or something while i pay for it) then 25-40 for gas that still gives me enough to get by

I agree with Kris. The Sport Trac is as capable as any stock explorer offroad. Many people have built up their ST's for offroading, like this one:

You should get it pronto before the 0% financing is over, that'll save you some money on payments. They've already started selling the 2001's cheaper around here to make way for the 02'. I think as long as you get what pleases you is all that matters, and don't get mad or frustrated about getting called a rich spoiled kid or anything, it's all in the thought process of each individual and how they were raised and how they got their first car. You get dogged for getting a brand new vehicle from someone who got one that was hardly even used. My first vehicle was 13 years old. Any way good luck with whatever you choose.

Man you better do some research into those numbers! Even with a large downpayment your still looking at $450-500 a month more then likely. Also Insurance under your parents will be more then $100. 25-40 on gas if your only going to go 300-600 miles! Which isn't that much in the end. :) You should start making payments to yourself now before you get locked into something like this for real to see if you can handle it. Or what happens when you turn 18 and the parents think its time for you to handle things on your own? Just think long and hard before locking your self into a payment. Plus with a payment there is no money leftover for mods usually. Especially with a salary like that. $290 a week at $7.25 an hour for a 40 hour work week would probably be about $230 or so after taxes which would be roughly about 900 bucks a month. If your going to school its going to be a rough 40 hours a week. :D

I'm going to abstain from any sort of opinions, but I wanted to post some of the coolest sport trac pictures ever....It's trkmagick's Sport Trac...check out this thread:

It actually makes me want to go out a get a ST instead of a Jetta(the wife wants a jetta)

Oh man, c'mon...you were actually thinking about getting a Jetta as opposed to a sport trac? MAYBE if you needed better gas milage...but other than that I don't know....

Thanks TwoTone! I was just fixing to post that! Just to fill ya in! The Sport Trac is holding up great w/ my mixed lift. I love it! I am going to test it out today after work on some trails here in Dallas. Thanks again.

Oh my goodness. You have to admire innocense.

OK, thanks to our over-spending, pork-barrel politicians and programs, you can forget about seeing that much money a month. The government is going to run with some of it, and believe me, they will take a lot more than you think.

I understand how you would really want this vehicle, but you need to be realistic as well.

In order to pay for that vehicle, you are going to have to put in a lot of damn hours, a lot. This gives you very little time to focus on the most worthwhile and invaluable activity of all, studying.

All that money you will spend on that car will never equal the return you WILL get from focusing your time and energy toward education. Sorry if this isn't "cool" in a pop-culture motivated mind. But let me tell you, image doesn't mean crap, never has, never will. A car doesn't say a damn thing about you, regardless of what some may think.

And even if you are able to afford an ST, is it worth it? You're barely 16 years old and you are going to throw yourself into $20,000 worth of debt? Kid, take it from anyone and everyone on this board, put debt, any debt off as long as you possibly can!!!

I buy things I can afford and I still want to shoot myself. Not to mention the fact, as I am sure this will be a requirement when you purchase the vehicle, you will have to have full insurance coverage, liability is not good enough. I am sure (at least I hope) you will be leasing the vehicle so if something does happen and you can't pay for it, you can at least save yourself. And with leasing the vehicle, more than likely you will have to maintain full coverage.

If you work hard in school and excel in everything you can, you can have any damn car you want. But even then, whatever you do end up getting will have little to say of what you have potential to do or achieve, that is something that only you can define by your actions.

Is it just me or is it frustrating how materialistic younger generations are becoming. I was damn lucky as a kid. I had a father who treated me 100 times better than his dad ever treated him. He busted his ass everyday. He never had the opportunity to go to college, but it was the one thing he wanted to see for his kids. He broke his back to give us every opportunity that he never had. I guess it is just hard to see the value of a dollar and hard work these days. When a 19 year old can throw up a website and become a millionaire, it's plausable how reality can become distorted.

Anyhow, I'm rambling.

Point is, you could be setting yourself up for a difficult road, and not a fun one either. You need to ask yourself why you want to take the route and if it is the best thing for you. You can get a decent car for far less than what you are looking to spend.

If there is one thing to remember in life, and I am sure this can apply to you: not everyone is as fortunate as you are. That's very important to remember. And believe it or not, but one of the last things that statement has anything to do with is money.

Not trying to crap on anyone's parade, I just feel that I should make all points known. My 2 cents.

Do you have any idea of what the gas mileage is on an Explorer? It's not a Civic...
25 to 40$ is about what I spend a week. And I'm not even driving my X that much cause I have a company vehicle.
