Ouch. Well I hope you saved a ton of money as a result of buying a lemon that makes up for the large repair bill... it's possible you could get a mechanic to look at it and determine if it was patched up to hide it. Also scanning the as-is clause, you still have some protections depending on what they disclosed and a lot of dealers will squirm their way out. They can't just sell you a knowingly broken car unless they tell you specifically what's broken. Sure, it's possible you genuinely encountered a legitimate breakdown for the first time. Did you consider or look at the car's history -- accidents and repairs? You may still have some recourse if you fight for it.
I once bought a used BMW in California from a shady dealer, but the deal was a few thousand less than anywhere else, and it looked fine in the shop, it had a clean record, and I test drove it, and to the best of my knowledge it was clean -- and it still had 2 years of factory warranty left. Over a year later, I started running into several minor problems, mostly electrical gremlins. Eventually I would learn that the car was seriously rear ended and repaired off the books with an underpowered battery -- which ended up costing me $800 to fix because it immobilized my car alarm and required a tow... and well everything BMW was expensive. This was over 10 years ago. There was little I could do because so much time had passed, but I was certainly pissed off and count myself lucky nothing else bad had happened.
