New to this site. I've only had my Explorer for about a month. I joined this site as I was searching why I get an exhaust smell in my car sometimes. But now my car is in the shop because the transmission and the "transfer case" have failed! I can't believe it.

Welcome to the Forum.
Sorry to read about your issues. I don't believe anyone here had both failures occur at the same time. There is an extensive thread on the exhaust smell. Did you find it?

Peter

Thanks. Yes I read some of it. The dealer is telling me all three of the issues are related. They claim the smell comes from fluid leaking from the transfer case and burning, but from reading that mentioned thread, I doubt that's the cause of that smell

It will be hard to say in your case. You would have a better idea once the current issues are repaired. The 'smells' in that other thread are not based on oil leaks. I hope they are doing the repairs under warranty. Good luck.

Peter

Thanks. No, no warranty. Ford's warranty had ended at 60k miles and I did not purchase it.

I find it very suspect that the tranny is shot. I could see the PUT leaking and needing replacement.

It also happens on the mazda cx-9's. When the transfer case goes so does the output shaft splines of the tranny.

I called a lemon law and they said that if you buy an "as-is" car I'm basically out of luck

Ouch. Well I hope you saved a ton of money as a result of buying a lemon that makes up for the large repair bill... it's possible you could get a mechanic to look at it and determine if it was patched up to hide it. Also scanning the as-is clause, you still have some protections depending on what they disclosed and a lot of dealers will squirm their way out. They can't just sell you a knowingly broken car unless they tell you specifically what's broken. Sure, it's possible you genuinely encountered a legitimate breakdown for the first time. Did you consider or look at the car's history -- accidents and repairs? You may still have some recourse if you fight for it.

I once bought a used BMW in California from a shady dealer, but the deal was a few thousand less than anywhere else, and it looked fine in the shop, it had a clean record, and I test drove it, and to the best of my knowledge it was clean -- and it still had 2 years of factory warranty left. Over a year later, I started running into several minor problems, mostly electrical gremlins. Eventually I would learn that the car was seriously rear ended and repaired off the books with an underpowered battery -- which ended up costing me $800 to fix because it immobilized my car alarm and required a tow... and well everything BMW was expensive. This was over 10 years ago. There was little I could do because so much time had passed, but I was certainly pissed off and count myself lucky nothing else bad had happened.

Thanks, I'm still looking looking to see what I can do. The Ford dealer that has my car didn't mention any prior work on it. The Carfax report only mentions regular maintenance. What I saved still won't cover the cost. And now I'm afraid of what other issues will come down the road.

CarFax means nothing. On a Ford you can have a dealer pull a Oasis Report which should have any work that is performed by a Ford dealer.

One problem with buying a used vehicle is that 90% of the sales are on a "AS IS" basis, this is where you need to read your paperwork and see if it says anything else.

Did they say if the fluid in the transfer case was light yellow, dark or grey in color indicating there was metal in it? If it was grey its been failing for a while, whats the mileage on it?

69,400. No mention about the liquid. I'll have to inquire about it

That's not a lot of miles. I'd be getting rid of it. Somebody obviously beat the crap out of it and then dumped it. An old trick when I was a kid was to fill a failing tranny with STP and it would run long enough to trade it in.
