Do The Transmission and PTU Share Fluid?

I'd be wary of Doorman, I haven't used any of their PTU's but have had horrible luck with their replacement intake manifolds. I'd be tempted to put a drain in your new PTU but that might be a problem if you ever need to warranty it, I did the mod on my wife's Flex and it was pretty simple to do, there's quite a few how to videos out there. How did you like that burnt gear lube smell, probably a good thing that you did the work outside.
That fluid smells terrible. I left it in the garage overnight and talked the wife into going in there to check the laundry. It's funny because she told me two weeks ago that her car had a rotten smell. I shampooed the carpets...

When the PTU's go bad they'll vent a propane type smell maybe that's what she smelled, blame it on the Explorer instead of the dog! :)

I just wanted to submit a follow up or "resolution" post. I installed the new Ford PTU and reinstalled the many items that I had to remove for this job. I test drove the car and all is well. I'm starting to read up on all of the 'issues' that these cars have. It seems that they require more maintenance than I imagined, but I love the car otherwise.
