Decided to refurbish coolant/belt/hoses/thermo this spring before the hot weather comes. I had never really worried about this since I bought the old girl 6 years ago from a municipal city gov't. Not having any issues, but thought it was past due.
Ordered new air filter, upper and lower hoses, themostat, belt and fan + fan tool from Amazon (free shipping!). Parts list below:
Fram CA7774 Extra Guard Round Plastisol Air Filter ($14)
Motorcraft KM2939 Upper Radiator Hose ($18)
Motorcraft KM2940 Lower Radiator Hose ($16)
Motorcraft RT1161 190F and 88C Thermostat ($24)
Goodyear 4060872 Gatorback Poly-V Belts ($18)
Dorman 620-149 Radiator Fan Blade ($55)
Powerbuilt 647074 Ford Fan Clutch Wrench Set ($17)
Getting the old parts off took 2/3 of the time. Cleaned all the mounting surfaces/holes and installed everything in about 3 hours. (I'm a computer programmer, not a mechanic.)
Refilled coolant in 30/70 mix with water (I live near Atlanta), burped the old girl twice and no leaks. Running a little cooler now and the temp gauge is only dancing between 1/4-3/8 now where before was 1/4-1/2.
Sidenote: 1) I replaced the hose spring clamps with screw-on. Geez they were a pain to remove. 2) The thermo rubber ring gasket works fine. But I carefully removed the old paper gasket remains and, when I remounted the intake housing I very carefully tighened-down the 3 bolts evenly in quarter-turn increments until done to insure even compression.
