sputter between 40 & 50 mph

I have a 96 V8 AWD. It tends to sputter between 40 and 50 MPH. If I push the button on the shifter and take it out of OD, it is much improved. Sometimes it feels like a shifting problem and at other times it feels like a miss in the engine. Anyone have a clue? I was guessing it may be a sensor on the tranny going out, but I'm learning OBD II one problem at a time. It has been doing this for a while and is getting worse. The engine light just came on, but the only code was a miss fire on cylinder #3.
