When I bought the Ex in Jan the brakes squealed and when I checked the discs were also warn, so earlier this month I had both discs and pads changed. Non Ford pattern parts were used to keep cost down. The new pads did not come with any shims, but loads of anti squeal paste was used. Now, after a couple of weeks they are squealing again, especially when the weather is warn at low speeds !

Anyone else solved a similar problem ?

Anyone know if there is a shim kit available ?

Anything seen on US parts sites that might help ?

Any help greatfully received

Al

Mine never squealed before they were changed (unsure if ford before, but at 49500, i would think so), but once the front pads ate the discs, i had new front discs and pads all round (non ford), and a couple of weeks after they started to squeak (when lightly applied, not sure if front or rear or both) and have done so ever since (8 months plus).

I am not sure of the answer to this, maybe the answer is to use Ford genuine pads and discs, i do know that Ford make special grease for use with the calper that you can only get from Ford, whether one should apply this to the back of the pads or not who knows, when mine were put on they had lots of anti-squeak paste.

It has been suggested to me to clean the braking parts with spray brake cleaner, including the rear handbrake shoes, i have never bothered, this might help. But if this doesn't solve it and the Ford grease doesn't, it would have to be the quality of the pads.

How thick in mm's are the rear pads when new?

My experience of brakes, but not in the Explorer. it had had them done just before I bought it, was that coperslip on the back of the pads is sufficient (but avoid getting it near the friction material). With all the dry weather we've had it also seems to increase squealing. A good soaking in natural rain appears to help!

ON the boss's Freelander we cured the squeal by jetwashing the calipers and stoneguards. Seemded to do the trick - loads of gunk type stuff came off.

It may be the quality of the pads used. Some of the more inexpensive pads do squeal more than better quality pads.

Its usually a mix of 2 things, a build-up of brake dust around the pads can cause them to squeak, blasting your brakes with a jet wash or brake cleaner will wash all the dust out. Also the surface of the pads acquire a shine which makes the brakes squeak, rubbing the pads down on a sandpaper like sheet to remove the shine also can eliminate the squeak.
