Today my wife got home from shopping saying the X (11,000 miles) was squealing every 2 minutes or so on the drive home from the city. Since that isn't all that specific I just took it our for a couple mile drive.

Wouldn't you know, within about a minute I heard what sounded like a mouse/chipmunk squealing from somewhere towards the back of the X (I think).

I don't know how else to describe it because it was gone as quick as it started (a split second) but if there was a mouse caught in the back, letting out a little squeak/squeal every so often, that's what it probably would sound like.

I don't recall that I was breaking, or I might have just applied the breaks and was slowing down (breaks were not on), but I hit the breaks a number of other times in my test and didn't hear it. Then out of the blue I heard it again. My wife reported hearing it while going about 60 up the highway home, so definitely no breaking involved there. She is sure of it.

All told in my 5 minute test I heard it 3 times. It doesn't sound like anything serious, but who knows. I've got to take the X in this week to have AC hoses replaced (had it in last week for a warm AC and they found the AC hoses had rubbed against something and worn right through). I can just see trying to describe this with enough detail the'll figure it out. I was the one who had to give them the TSB for the bad fan before they realized that's what was causing my overheating.

Any thoughts? Things I should look for or try to test?

A few more things to note....this is a Limited.

Since this was the first time we've heard this, it did rain a ton today here in Upstate NY - thought not the first time we've had heavy rain.

The sound system was not on.

Rear wiper was off. That scared me a few weeks ago...rear wiper on dry window.

p.s. I did just check for kids toys with dying batteries. That's usually the cause of at least a few "strange noises" each month.

If you have the 3rd seats, perhaps they are the cause. You could try putting them up or if already up, put them down and see if that clears it up. Have you tried opening and closing the liftgate? That is the only other thing I can think of that might move a bit other than the spare tire.
