Greetings All!

My X squeaks when the wheel turns. According to the dealer, I need to replace the sway-bars (for approximatly $700).

Anyhow, I would like to obtain more information before letting the dealer perform the repairs.

Basically, the symptoms entail squeaking while thurning [sharply] at low speeds.

I'd greatly appreciate any information.

Many Thanks,

C

I would not be inclined to spend $700 on something you may well be able to fix yourself for $50 and 30 minutes of your time. Now, grant you, if your p/s pump is bad, or your tie-rod ends are shot, then it might be worth it to let the mechanics have a go at it. But assuming your suspension/steering parts are still ok, then:

Are the tie-rod ends lube-able on your 2000 Explorer? If they are, lube them with gray moly grease and see if that stops your squeak.

The front sway bar will have bushings on each side where it connects to the frame. You could very easily partially unbolt the front sway bar and coat the bushings with some gray moly grease, bolt it back up, and see if that stops your squeak when turning.

Again, all of what I just said is easy stuff that requires no special skill or tools...
It's worth a shot, anyway, before you drop $700 on it...

sway bar replacement for $700!!

thats a little to much...you could get a rebuilt tranny for that

if it is a sway bar you need the local yunk yard...and its one of the easiest parts to change...took me about an hour when mine was bent from an offroading trip but i drove around with it messed up, for close to a month, no sounds just a very VERY bumpy drive

Nope. Not sway bars

Sway bar bushings, possibly - 60 in parts.
Sway bar end links, possibly - 60 in parts.

I would get another opinion from another shop here. If they really said sway bars they are pullin a fast one....
