I replaced my front brakes and drivers side rotor a few months ago and I am hearing a squeeling/crunching noise coming from the front end when the brakes are applied. I have no idea what could be wrong, Does anyone have any suggestions? Could it be that the new rotor is not a 4wd rotor? Any help is greatly appreciated.

maybe the caliper slide pins are dirty again

Did you do it or did Ford do it? I had my front rotors replaced w/pads at Ford, and I even supplied the ART slotted discs and they squeal like hell.

Motorcraft brake pads are just crap.

I did them myself with Bendix pads. Could it be that the rotor is still kind of new and it needs to be broken in?

I used Bendix pads and Wagner rotors. No squeal/noise whatsoever. I did mine myself.

There are two main reasons disc brakes squeel. The first (and most common) is due to glazed rotors. This occurs when the surface of the rotor "glazes" over due to excessive heat (stop and go traffic or riding the brake are the main contribuitors). The only cure is to have the rotors turned and properly finished. The chance of the squeel comming back will always be there and the time it takes to return is determined on how the vehicle is opperated. The second reason is from dust buildup between the pad and rotor. This isn't a problem on properly working brake systems, but will develop on any system that has sitcking slides or a caliper that is going bad. The fix is to address the problem and clean both the rotor and the pads (carefully scuff pads with sandpaper).

I think I might just have my mechanic look at it when he replaces my shocks.

The third reason which sounds mor like a grinding sound though is rust build-up on the very edge of the rotors. A couple of weeks after replacing my pads, I had a horible grinding sound whenever I stepped on the brakes. What I found was the inner edge of my rotor had surface rust on it and since my pads were new, they had a angled edge completely around the outer 1/4" of the pad. As the angled part wore down it created more surface area on the pad which started to come in contact with the rust. After a few hundred miles, the angled part had worn completely away leafing my pads flat all the way across. The noise went away once the pads wore down enough. My pads were the Extreme Performance pads sold through Performance Products. My rotors are still the stock rotors.
