I have a 95 4.0 that that will idle at very low RPMs and then stall, after it has been driven (Usually after we stop at store and shut it off and try to start it when we return). I will then have to ride the brake to keep it running at stop lights etc.. Then, after a few more stops at stores, it will run fine. It is very rare for this to happen first thing in the morning, or after it has been sitting for a while. And it does'nt happen all of the time (every couple of days). We first noticed it happened on warmer days, but now that does'nt seem to matter. I'm suspecting IAC or TPS. Any body have any similar experiences or good ideas? Thanks!

If it's not giving you any codes in the computer I would suspect the IAC. If the TPS is going bad it will usually give you the ole check engine light and the corresponding codes. IAC's have been known to get a little dirty and start to stick. On the other hand it could be a intermittent vacuum leak.

Hey Shribe,my 95 Limited does the identical thing. I posted the question last fall, then the problem went away over the winter, now it's back -- it's definitely temperature related.

The answers I got here were O2 sensor and also O2 sensor. I've just been pricing them, and my buddy at the parts store says his book ignores the 95 model, so I'm not sure what 2 buy. Also, I've read (here) that the Fuel Pressure Regulator can cause the O2 sensor(s) to go bad. It's $95.44 at the friendly price. I'm not sure what to do.

What do IAC, and TPS stand for in English? How many parts do I have to throw at this problem? Is there a way to diagnose/test these individual parts?

Let us know what fixes yours.

IAC= Idle Air Controller
TPS=Throttle Position Sensor

The 2001 Civic had the same problem of stalling at lights etc. It was diagnosed as a Powertrain Control Module problem and a recall was issued. This may be off topic, but i think we do have a PCM don't we?
Sorry...just a shot in the dark.

Thanks for the Translation, 'bear.

So we have:
1 to 3 Oxygen sensors
Idle Air Controller (IAC)
Throttle Position Sensor (TPS)
Fuel Pressure Regulator (FPR)
MAS Sensor
Any or all of which could have some bearing on this problem. It do get confusing.

No luck yet

I cleaned my mass airflow sensor to see if that might help, but it didn't seem to change anything. I have little more info that I did'nt post originally. About the same time the idle problem started, I noticed every time that I slowed for a stop sign, the idle would fall off and almost stall just before the auto transmission would downshift. The lights would dim and then it would come back to normal idle by the time I was at a full stop. I don't know if this is related, but maybe somebody will be familiar with this. One more thing, where is the IAC?!?! I thought I knew, but when I went to take it off to clean it, I realized I was looking at the wrong thing. I thought it was the box just below the air air bypass valve. The Haynes manual does'nt tell me anything about it, and my 91 does'nt have "it" (I think "it" is an EGR pressure regulator).

hot re-start stumble stall

I had the same problem in my 4.0L '94 XLT 4WD. The mechanic said the "code" indicated fuel pump problem so he changed it...but problem recurred. Someone on this site said check the IAC, so they cleaned that out...but problem recurred. Finally mechanic changed the O2 sensor and it solved the problem. A few weeks later a similar rough idle problem occurred, but not the same hot/start issues, and "code" indicated EGR valve..which mechanice removed/cleaned/reinstalled and no more problems. Hope this helps.
