Stalls in Drive (1998 Explorer Sport SOHC)

Assuming you have the SOHC motor, it's likely your lower intake manifold gaskets. Parts are $35 for the 00M12 service kit (00M12 was the TSB they issued for the problem, and includes the oil gallery volume reduction plug and the revised cam chain tensioner for the driver's side) and the install takes a couple hours for the average shade-tree mechanic. There are hundreds (if not more) of members here that have done it. Solves the problem almost every time.

I tried to purchase the kit this afternoon as I have the idle/lean code problem with a slight rattle upon cold startup....they could not find ONP-00M12. Do you know the part # for the program? Is it XU2Z-6K254-AA? If so they wanted 84.00 for it...........

Well I just got back from a 50-60 mile test drive... all seems to be a-OK. Normally I could get it to stall within 1.5-2 miles from home. I went that far, stopped, about 8 more miles, stopped, about 12 miles, stopped, and then drove to town to get fuel and such. I did a lot of stopping when driving around town (picked roads with several stop signs and not just flashing lights), and I couldn't get it to hiccup at all. Hopefully the problem is fixed (it sure seems like it is).

More info please...was it the torque converter clutch solenoid?

The TCC solenoid. It's the only solenoid down there with a bracket on it (for mounting).

Remember, there are a number of issues that could cause stalling in drive. I'd highly recommend bringing your vehicle to a shop to get it looked at like I did. I would hate to have someone replace the TCC solenoid and have it not be the problem. I would probably have never been able to diagnose the issue myself, as I was focusing on the engine and not the tranny.

I'm definitely glad someone referred me to the tranny shop. The guy I dealt with has been working there for 25 years (the shop has been open for 35), and he has worked on everything from Explorers to Hummers. He noted that this problem was more of an issue on some GM vehicles a few years back. What happens is the solenoid fails mechanically. Then it gets stuck in the open position, so it's like the vehicle is taking off in 4th gear. The reason it didn't stall in 2 or 1 is because the oil flow changes when you shift into those gears.

The 00M12 kit I have is a YL2Z-9E473-AA
Tensioner, Manifold gaskets, Oil restrictor. I also use a 97JZ-9F670-AA
IAC Gasket.

The 00M12 kit I have is a YL2Z-9E473-AA
Tensioner, Manifold gaskets, Oil restrictor. I also use a 97JZ-9F670-AA
IAC Gasket.

Not needed, but can't hurt to change. Not very expensive.

i have a 1994 explorer i was driving and it just stoped . i cranked it a couple of times.
it acted like it was out of gas . after five min, it started right up.Has any one had the same problem

I removed Fuel pump relay And switched with A.C relay. Solved Problem . john
