ford Explorer. It's just a loud sound form under the front of the car. A friend of mine who owns Town Car said that it could be a transmission. What do you think?

Thanks.

Uhhhh, a definition of the sound would help. What does it sound like? When does it occur? Where under the car does it come from? What conditions does it occur under? Is the vehicle manual or automatic?

Kinda hard to help without a description. That's like calling the doctor and saying "something hurts somewhere in my body" and expecting him to diagnose it over the phone!~

You right JDraper I didn't describe the sound.
You know when it's freezing out and you start up the car in the morning and it running on high RPM. Well the sound that I have is kind of like that but the car has low RPM. I don't know if from above explanation you could tell what could be the problem, but thanks for replying to my post.

Just a warning that at this age the belt idler assembly is about to go. Look down at the arm where it mounts to the block. If you see more white bushing on one side than the other then it is ready to fly apart. I also found the bearings in the pulleus were dries out. That could be your noise. This is a good time to put on a new belt. You can then spin the pulleys for noise and the idler will fly apart when you put a wrench on it if it is bad.
