What would cause my starter to keep turning after the Explorer is already running? The starter went out about 6 months ago, a shop fixed it, but we were noticing sometimes what sounded like it was still turning after the SUV was started. This went on for a while until, it did it again on the highway. It continued to turn even after we stopped tring to start the Explorer and burned up the starter. We had another starter put on and now it appears to be doing it again.

Any ideas? The mechanic, I assumed figured a new starter would fix the problem but apparently something else is going on.

maybe the mechanic only replaced the starter and not the solonoid or bendix and the solonoid was always engaging....just a thought

Oops, forgot to add, he replaced the solonoid. He seemed to be at a loss as to why it would continue to happen. Could it be another bad starter?

Joe...Maybe the ignition switch on your console is shorting out in the run position just as though you would be turning your key all the way forward to engage the starter...just a thought

My old 92 did this once before. Started the truck and the starter kept turning. I then turned the ignition off and engine kept turning. So, i turned the ignition to on again, then tapped on the solenoid on the fender. It didn't work, so I smashed it to bits and the starter kept turning. What Ford did with the starter systems on earlier explorers was they put two solenoids in the explorers. The one that actually failed was the one on the starter. After tapping that one with the tire iron it stopped turning. I was amused that ford put in some general motors thinking into this starting system. My new 2000 doesn't have the second solenoid on the fender, at least I cannot find it. My 97 explorer did though???
