Does anyone have any experience with o/h the starter motor [94 4.0 V6]

Mine has 108,000 on it and has never been changed / OH; I am thinking of just pulling it and replacing starter brushes, clean comutator, etc before there is a problem. I just wondered if these starters were easy to work on?

Thanks

Yup. I did this at 180K on my '92 Ranger a couple of years ago, still going strong. Had mine done by a pro for under $80 while I was at work one day.

It's real easy. Do not forget about the brass bearing in the nose end.

for the cost of parts in the rebuild plus time spent (if you do it) why wouldnt one just buy a new starter?

In general as the bearings wear, especially the commutator end, the commutator will wear in an egg shape an that will necessitate having it turned to true it up. A starter is a pretty durable piece of gear so if you are lucky that won't be an issue. Don't forget the solenoid contacts, as they wear from all that arcing they loose a lot of material. Have you checked out the cost of a rebuilt starter? You can still have fun taking the old one apart just for the heck of it and turn it in as a core.

You should be able to pick up a good rebuilt starter for $90 or less at a major auto parts store.

Probelm with the rebuilt ones is that they MAY not match up with your engine as well as the OE did when it came from the factory. An old mechanic told me that it's much better to rebuild your orriginal equipment when possible. Apparently you can get more miles from your old rebuilt parts than you can from someone elses old rebuilt parts I guess! Like I said before, I got mine rebuilt by a pro for under $80. Just my $0.02.

for that 80 you could probably get a new one with the core.
