when i start, it sounds like the starter or flywheel has lost a tooth. Ive never removed the starter from a X (i have a 91) before, is it very hard? I think I lost a tooth when I tried to start after transposing two spark plug wires (yeah, i know). Anyway, what are the odds that its a starter problem (cheap/easy I assume) as opposed to a flywheel issue (not so easy and spendy, i assume!)????

Two bolts hold the starter on. Take it off re-attach the ground then have some one turn the key to check for a bad bendix. Then also check to see if the flywheel spins freely. The flywheel takes alot more effort to turn if it's still in one peice. If your flywheel is busted then it will sound like the starter still works but won't crank the engine.
