About every 5th or 6th time I start my explorer I hear a grinding sound after it starts. I have rebuilt the starter and put a new drive gear in it. I have tried washers under the bolts in different ways thinking the starter may be crooked some how. Any one have any suggestions? Thanks.

I have the same problem with my 93 explorer. Somtimes it does it and sometimes it doesn't. I have no clue what is could be, but I have checked to see if something was loose and found nothing. So just letting you know that your not the only one.

My starter seemed to work fine other than the problem. I rebuilt it with a new drive gear/brushes bushing etc. and still the same problem. Today I bought a used starter from the autowrecker for $65 Canadian and it solved the problem.

glad to here you got it straightened out.
