I think my 1991 explorer is in need of a new starter. I say this because when I turn the ignition key there is a single click sound then nothing. Checked the battery and cables and all seems fine. Does this sound like a starter problem? Is there anything else I should be checking before buying a new starter?

I am "mechanically inclined" but by no stretch of the imagination a "mechanic". Is this a difficult fix for a novice?

Also Im sure this topic has been covered before and is in the FAQ's or somewhere but I couldnt find the information.

Thanks in advance

Replace the solenoid on the inside of the passenger fender. They're like $7. If that doesn't help then its the starter. They're like $100-$120 and it only involves removing like 2 bolts and a wire. Wicked simple.

Thanks...will give that a try. Starter replacement sounds simple enough if the solinoid doesnt do it.

You can also have the starter tested at most parts stores. You should have it tested before you buy and install the new one. It seems to me that my 91 had a factory recall associated with the starter. I think the recall was wiring related, but I am not sure. I think NAPA was the cheapest place in for a starter.
