2000 explorer sport ohv
Good more morning peeps. I used the search function to help find results but I keep finding ohv to sohc and sohc to ohv information.

I have a 2000 explorer sport with a 5 speed 4x4 it’s a sweet little truck. Sold it to my brother in law and he blew the motor and ragged it out. I got the truck back and I want to fix it up.

It’s got the 4.0l ohv 8th number in the vin is an x motor.

I sourced a used motor with good heads guaranteed no bad gaskets and a 6 month warranty for 1000$ I know it’s a steep price but for the warranty and the guarantees I don’t care.

I am going to rebuild the old motor if the block is still good. I am sure the heads are cracked it hisses like crazy when it runs (will run for 1 min or so) also oil pressure doesn’t register.

For the donor motor should I buy a new radiator?
I am getting a new water pump, fan clutch, and thermostat. Is there any other parts I should put on new while the new engine is out? What hoses should I replace? I want to purchase all these at once and use affirm so I can do a pay by month thing and then pay it all off with my tax return before interest hits.

I also have the diy all data account and I plan on following that.

If anyone has extra tips I’d greatly appreciate it. I plan on tanking pictures of every part and videoing the routing of all cables and hoses as I take it apart so I have reference.

I know this has been asked if it bothers you I am sorry but don’t post that this has been asked just post links to other posts.

I work 75-80 hours a week and I really don’t have any extra time. I will be doing this while I eat my dinner between 8-11pm before I wake up at 4am to go back to work.

Thank you!!!

I plan on totally rebuilding the old motor new everything.

Any ideas on a source for heads I found some but they are stupid expensive. The new engine will eventually get a turbo charger.

I’d replace the camshaft synchro drive with an OEM unit. They’re balls to change, and it’d be easier on the stand.

Also a great time for accessories like a bypass oil filter kit, block heater, remote transmission spin on filter.

I’d also have a good look at the front axle for seals and such. Way easier to work with an empty engine bay.

If the motor you bought is bad, you are guaranteed to have to pull it out to get a replacement. Which is why I'd get the $150 motor from the U pull it yard. Odds of 2 bad ones in a row are slim, especially if the donor is smashed up. I've done several motor replacements, if the transmission is a 5 speed manual, replace the slave cylinder. I like to pull the engine and transmission together. Installation, same thing.if there isn't anything wrong with the current radiator, I'd run it. I've replaced parts as preventative maintenance only to have those parts fail, resulting in me putting the original parts back on. I either put the hardware in bags taped to what was taken off or tape the bolts in a bundle to the item. Blue painters tape and a sharpie labeling both sides will make life easier.

Okay I’ll add slave cylinder to the list I did a full clutch and flywheel job on this truck in 2016. Can’t remember if I did anything with the slave cylinder thanks for the info!!

They usually come with a tool that points towards the radiator when 1 is at TDC. If the motor doesn’t have a lot of miles, this might be overkill.

Motorcraft if you’re doing the camshaft position sensor. You want that to be a one and done on the OHV, I believe it’s a ***** to get to unlike the 5.0?

Donor motor is 173k but they insist it’s in great condition 🫣 we’ll see either way it’s got a 6 month warranty
