2000 Explorer Sport. 4.0
Hey, gang,

I had amazing results the last time I posted an issue I had on he forum, so I'm hoping for some more good luck!

I have a 2000 Explorer Sport. 4L. 147K.

I can start the Explorer and it will fire right up. Idle high for a moment and when I put it in drive, will sort of put put at first and then run just fine. The real problem I've been having is when I turn the engine off and go to restart it, it will start then idle down and kill. Unless I let it sit for a few hours, then it will fire up again.

This is sort of how it started when it died in November and wouldn't crank over, so I'm hoping to catch it before something major happens. I have noticed over the last couple years that my air filter hasn't been getting dirty...which is strange since I live in Louisiana and the pollen and general crap that flies through the air is insane. Not sure if that has something to do with what's causing the problem or not.

Things I have done since November:
New fuel filter
New fuel pump
replaced IAC

Any help would be appreciated. Really hoping having to avoid bringing it in to a shop.

If your air filter isn’t getting dirty at all (or less dirty than it used to) I’d do a good check that you aren’t sucking air in somewhere downstream o the filter.

Sounds like a coolant temp sensor to me

Or intake o rings

May as well do the whole thermostat housing
At the same time I recommend a metal one

02-10 Explorer Mountaineer Aluminum Metal Thermostat Housing Assembly Kit | eBay

***02-10 Ford Explorer 4.0 V6 Metal Thermostat Housing Made in the USA*** | eBay

The Simmons housing don't come with the sensors or mounting hardware but is a slightly better design

The austekk housing comes with everything you need Inc the sensors this is what I am using now

There will be a huge fuss which one you should buy they are both better than the pos plastic oem housing hope this helps

I agree, that does sound like a possible coolant temp sensor.
