I have been having some intermittent starting problems with my 1998 Explorer. It has the 4.0 SOHC. Every once in awhile I will go out and try to start it, but it wont start right away. It cranks over but it takes it awhile to start. I do hear the fuel pump when I go to start it. This does not happen all of the time just once in awhile. Can anyone tell me what is causing this?

My ex was doing this exact same thing. Try cleaning the crank position sensor. You might want to change the fuel filter also. Once I cleaned the cps and changed fuel filter (looked like it never been changed) it remedied the problem, and has cranked up like a champ ever since. I know it was frustrating for me when one day it would start and the next it wouldn't, hope you get it all worked out.

I changed the fuel filter last week, but still the same problem. Any other suggestions?

Really try cleaning the cps. It may not sound relative but it was the problem with mine. I couldn't figure out why I was having the problem you're explaining after a full tune up. It came down to something as simple as a dirty sensor. You might want to give it a shot.
