My 97 Explorer OHC RWD seems to be having problems.
It has worked flawless up until now, although I don't get great gas mileage.

Tonight I went to start it after parking it on a steep hill to wash it. It started fine, but the idle was VERY rough. It would surge up to 3k and then down to .5k and so forth, so I threw it into reverse to back down and it stalled.

I rolled it down and restarted it and the same problem, it was non responsive to the gas pedal. After re-starting it a few times as it was stalling it totally stopped starting.

I let it sit 10 minutes and it went through the same cycle again. Start but rough idle stops etc. This whole cycle happened about 5 times.

Eventually I got it to start and it idled around 1k, but sounding like it was missing.

After letting it run for about 20 minutes I took it for a 5 minute drive and it is missing a little bit and it seems to lack power, plus my shifting is all off. It is waiting until about 3k - 4k before shifting into the next gear and then kinda clunks into it.

After the long drive I parked it and turned off the engine. It now doesn't start again!

I am pretty sure it isn't the transmission as that wouldn't affect starting.

I have a feeling it is some kinda electrical component.

Any help is appreciated so I don't get taken at the mechanic.

I had a tune-up under 10 months ago with everything being replaced. I also have new fuel injectors and belts, tensioner etc.

Could be TPS, possibly O2 sensors as well. Have you replaced either yet?

No I have never replaced any of the sensors. Would things like this show up if they hook my truck up to their machine?

If your check engine light is on or has been on recently then yes you can pull the codes and see exactly what is wrong.
