steering damper/stabilizer

my 92 xlt's steering feels a little bit squirley compared to driving newer cars. it kinda bothers me. my question is: what exactly is a steering stabilizer. will it basically just tighten up the squirliness? i dont like it because if you hit a pothole or something in the road it completely jolts my steering wheel. how much do they cost?what are the pros & cons? thanks

they are awsome, about $70, and its like a shock mounted sideways to help soften or eliminate the jolt and jerk out of the wheel when you rail a pot hole.
 






do they make a big difference? sounds like what im looking for
 






i know exactly what ur talkin about and its what you want...get a "single kit" and if its not enough get the dual kit.

If I remember how mine was it should not jolt at all if you're not lifted. Check ball joints, tie rods sway bar bushings and radius arm bushings. I remember mine jolted a lot from the back because my spring eye bushings were toast. Before I lifted it mine was really stable so check everything up front first, might also wanna check the steering box and the rag joint in your steering column they could be the culprit.

Once you've made sure eveything is ok up front, go for the stabilizer, single shock should do the job till you go up to 35" tires.

You've got to be carefull that you don't hide an underlying problem by putting the stabilizer, cuz if you do, the loosenes will still be there in emergency manoeuvers and you might over correct from lack of "feeling" how the steering reacts.

Check your alignment as well, that may be the cause as well.
