The out-put shaft, pitman shaft is leaking. I see that they sell a seal kit for that. $17
Would anyone know is it easy for a decent back yard mechanic to change the seals? Can it be done on the truck?
or would it be to my benefit to just replace the gear box for $160
Any insight would be appreciated.

IMO it will require some work to replace the seals and I'm not even sure you could do it with the steering gear still in the car (I would remove it completely and have it on a bench). But first you need to evaluate the steering gear to see if it is worn and needs replacement. It is very common for the steering gear to get internally worn causing sloppy/wandering steering.. How does your X steer/handle when travelling down a straight road? Are you constantly correcting and do the wheels respond immiedietly to steering wheel imput? If you turnt he steering wheel 1/4"+ before the car responds then either the shaft or steering gear are worn and need to be replaced.

I had mine done last week. I had the same problem. I trust the mechanic that did the work. His recommendatin was to replace the gear. My steering was sloppy and I am very satisfied with the new steering gear's handling performance. I recommed replace the gear. I do not think it is a difficult repair. But you must do it correctly, because serious injury or death can occur if it is installed improperly.

I replaced my steering gear 2 months ago...The Steering was sloppy and it could be hairy to drive at highway speeds. It started going bad 4+yrs ago a little at a time. I tightend up the gear several times, but knew it was only a matter of time before It needed to be done.. My steering has nevery been better and now handles like a dream. The whole process was surprisingly easy to do, but will require a buddy to help since the unit was a hefty 30lbs or so (making it difficult to unbolt and hold at the same time).
