I've got a 91' Ex with a sloppy steering gear and I'm wondering if there is a kit to rebuild it or if there is no choice but to buy a rebuild or used one?

Any help out there on this subject would be greatly appreciated. Thanks!

Rebuilding a steering gear is not something you want to tackle.

Have you tried to tighten the pre-load adjustment on the top of the steering box?

(the top nut with a flat tip screw driver type bolt sticking out of the top)

(this is located below the power steering pump , on the steering box toward the radiator, but on top of the box, as seen from driver's side fender, looking down upon it)

Loosen the nut and turn the screw type head 3/4 of a turn then tighten (you may have to hold the screw type head from turniing) and take it for a drive.

Still too loose? re-do proceedure.

Won't return back to center when streering out of a turn when you take your hands off the wheel? (loosen it up a bit)

Sorry folks, forgot to add the details,, I posted this question once before with no response so I didn't bother to waist much time on it...

MrByole: I am not a professional mechanic by no means but… I've had transaxles torn down to a pile of rubble 12 feet long before, I’m not afraid to tackle any job... Would you have more info about rebuild parts for this gear? It seems there is some kit available that includes a “c” clip and a couple of washer shaped items.. don’t know if that’s what I need though… Here's a link to Parts America with a pic, if it turns out, I returned to this url and had to re-enter my zipcode lol :

If this procedure takes too many special tools or something , maybe I’ll give up at that point and buy a rebuild, just thought It would be great to have the experience of rebuilding it myself…

SVO: Thanks for the advise, but I have played the "twist the screw adjuster" game 4 times now it just ends up too tight to turn WITH steering slop lol. Toast I believe…

Any additional advie on this subject would be greatly appreciated, thanks all...

I have a similar issue, only mine leaks along the flange where the adjustment screw is. I’d like to disassemble it replace gaskets and roll. Has anyone rebuilt one of these.
