Steering play on a 1998 Ranger.

i got a 98 ranger and the steering has like 3 inches of play and i have replaced the rack but still has the play the shafts are still good i dont know whats the problem is if anyone knows thank you.
 






That's not usually a rack problem, yours is most likely in the steering box. If not already done before, you can adjust it to reduce the play by loosening the top lock nut, then turning the shaft in a half turn. (see picture). Then tighten the nut and drive it around cornersand see if it needs a little more, but don't overdo it. You want about 1-1.5" free play. Also, tie rod ends and idler arm can cause similar symptoms so check those. They usually wear out before the steering box.

It won't last that way forever, eventually it will need replacement, but you may get another 50k out of it unless you are running wide front tires, that tears them up.
