I have a 98 ranger 4.0L and had heard that it takes 2 different spark plugs ,has that remained true or have the double platnium work just as well

IMO, if who ever makes that plug and it's listed in their cataloge for your engine then it will be fine. On my 5.0 I've done all the double, triple and quad platnium and it ran just fine. If it's listed then the reach of the plug down into the head will be the same also.

It is my understanding that the spark plugs from the factory are different from one side of the engine to the other. The double platinum is a perfect replacement.

It has to do with the polarity of the spark being different on one side than it is on the other. The double platinum spark plugs have both covered.
