Tried this in the "stock" forum and got zero response, so i guess I'll try here.

Is there any physical difference between the `95-97 and the `98-01 steering racks? I know they are listed as different racks, and the `98-01 even list 2 different ones for 2dr vs 4dr, but is it just a ratio difference or maybe a fitting, or is there a physical difference that won't allow them to interchange? Asking because I'm about to redo the front end on my `96 Sport and I have a brand new Motorcraft rack sitting in my garage from my old `98 V8 Mountaineer that I sold before ever installing it. So, will it work in my `96 without any ill effects? Changing a hose or something is fine, but don't want to have to do anything ridiculous. Thanks

With a little more research I've found that the hoses are the same, as are the inner tie rods, but the outer tie rods are different. So I'm thinking the outer has something to do with the knuckles, so that shouldn't be an issue. So does anyone know if there is something different that would keep me from using the `98 rack in my `96? And if so, what is it?

As far as I know there isn't I've used a 2000 sport rack in a 96 4 door xlt. I even have the ranger steering shaft .
