My leather covering on my steering wheel is in bad shape. I have purchased a new cover off EBAY from "Wheel Skins". They were nice enough to email me and ask for sizing because I said I wanted to take off the old covering and replace it with the new one they are going to send. My question is should I wrap the bare steering wheel with something before I get the new one ?? it looks like there is some sort of string under the OEM one that kind of spirals around the steering . They (Wheel Skins) are waiting for me to measure the wheel after I remove the old one for the correct size........let me say I am impressed at them taking this much effort to get this right for me!!

If I just put the new one over the original it will look bad because it will show through and not provide a solid foundation for the new cover. I can actually twist the OEM cover with my hand pretty easy. Has anyone ever come across this before ?? How did you handle it ??

I thought about some grip tape for cycling to go under to give a good foundation as the Wheel Skins cover has no padding ...just leather. Can anyone please give me some advise or what they have done in the past ??

Thanks

Open up the old cover just enough to get some glue/goop in there & stick it to the wheel. I think you would want the orig. cover on for the padding. The wheelskin will cover all of the orig. cover, nothing shows through on mine.

I have a wheelskin cover. I just wrapped it over the factory leather.
I have seen new wheels on Ebay recently. Might be the better way to go rather then dealing with re-wraping the whole wheel.

My leather cover was loose and it twisted real badly too. It even bunched up slightly. I was able to smooth it most of it out before installing the Wheelskins cover over it. The installation of the Wheelskins was so tight, there was no movement at all when done. There was just a slight uneven feeling to the fingers that was not noticeable by sight. Overall it worked out great.
