Steering wheel play

Can anyone tell me how much steering wheel play they have? Mine has about an inch, at the rim of the steering wheel.
I am on my third steering rack to try and solve it!!!!!
There is absolutly no play in the column right down to the rack.
I've had a couple of the racks to pieces and the play seems to come from a 'damper rod' that goes through the pinion shaft.
Any thoughts please?

Hi Kev. Pretty sure mine has that much if not more slop. I just bought a new-ish Peugeot and now when I drive the Explorer it feels more than a little... vague

Lol. My wifes i10 has tight steering as well. My original rack [ pre crash damage ] was really slack free though.
