I don't know why, but recently, my '98 Explorer XLT, everytime I go at about or higher then 40 mph, the steering wheel shakes out of hand, as if its becoming unstable, and requires me to put a whole lot of pressure to keep the vehicle from swaying out of line, what could be the matter?

It could be a tire out of balance, wheel bearings, ball joint, maybe a cv shaft if you have 4wd, or alignment. I'm sure there is something I am forgetting, but I bet someone else will chime in.

your tires/wheels are out of wack... balance them and problem should be solved.

Normal shake is at abot 60 mph... and goes away after like 70 mph... but it's moderate, not crazy...

Ok cool, sound cheap enough to fix! Taking the explorer to do a check up on everything, i treated this car like crap, because I was out of money, drove it for like 10k miles, and only did oil changes to it... So i plan on getting that shakey steering wheel problem fixed, and some fuse problems, and some cluster lights fixed too. This car is bloody reliable if you ask me, I bought the car from a salvage yard, the front end was totaled, and then parts were stolen from it, I bought the car with 10k miles on it in '99 for $2500, fixed it up for around $8000 (good thing the salvage yard let me take some parts off of a '99 sport which was totaled every which way, cut my repair costs down!). The car now has 77K on it, and I believe that its pretty darn reliable, so far all my ford vehicles never gave me trouble, and I have quite a bit... 3x towncars, 1x expedition, 1x E350.
