I bought a new Pioneer deck for my 1997 explorer. It has power and signal from my antenna, but wont play any music. After research I found out I need to bypass the stock amp. How do I do this?
They make a specific harness to do so. Check on crutchfield I believe they have it. I ended up removing my amp and running my own wires but buying the harness is the right way.
I did one of those recently, and as stated above, it is a bit of work.
The bypass harness (about 14' long) does not require cutting into the vehicles wiring harness, but you will need to pull most of the trim panels off the passenger side, and disconnect the seat belts. It is possible to open the factory conduits (above the rockers) and lay the bypass harness in there. I soldered the adapters to the HU, used heat shrink, cable ties, and it turned out real nice.
Hope you don't find what I did, a dam mouse condo back where the amp is located. It was huge, and there were dead mice all around, in various stages of of decay & dessication. Some looked like they came out of pharoahs tomb. About two dozen or so it was rough.
Well I had an old deck in there before, and I think it also bypassed the amp. Also, I just bought subs and an amp, so it's not like I need the factory amp that is in there already.

Technically, the ''Right" way to do it is to take out the plastic in your cargo area, and splice the wires. But The way I did it was this:
-Fold down the back right seat
-pull up that cover thingy hiding the open space
-there are a bunch of wires. cut them, and splice the speaker wire to the radio wire, effectively cutting off the amp.
If you're interested in this, reply to me and I'll give you the full details how I did it.
